With all the new technology available, is starting a marine tank as difficult as pet shops make it out to be?

Do we need top of the range equipment and what are the minimum requirements for starting a succesful marine tank?

Its fine to have all the bells and whistles, but I have photos of affordable systems

running really well.

Will post some photos later.

OK, so what do you consider to be affordable and what are the absolute minimum requirements for setting up a sustainable marine system.

Well since a certain breeder (Not pointing fingers, just follow my eyes ;o)===>Derek) is trying to convince me that I want, need, must have a marine tank... Let's hear more about this. I know NOTHING about marine setups, except that the water is salty, the fish are prettier, and you can have Seahorses (Yipee!)... So tell us more. I don't think I can convince my husband to let me have another tank, but he's always loved marine fish... this may be my only chance! Q: whats the smallest marine tank that you can have?

Thought I'd re-iterate the question... What's the smallest marine tank that one could have? (reasonably) I spent about an hour browsing the pet shop at Hillfox this morning (Just browsing, I promise!) and am simply amazed at the variety of creatures that we have in Earth's waters. I would one day like to own a SMALL (therefore lower-maintenance) marine tank, just for shrimps, and perhaps some seahorses. I don't know what is it with me an bottom-feeders, but i just love shrimps!

hey all when i got my 4ft cabinet tank,i was in two minds, wondering what to do fresh water or marine????? Marine setup for my tank was gonna cost me in rough idea R3000, the skimmer was R900, the live rock was bout R500(for 3 only). The salt water they where gonna charge me R1 a litre. The sand(crushed shells and gravel was 400 for bout 35kg's. Ofcoarse then u gotta have the heater and pump and waver fan. Fishies where also not badly priced, clown fish where R85, and shrimps where R55. Kirsty getting back on whats the smallest size marine setup u can make is roughly up 2 u. Iv'e seen one at a petshop and it was 40cmX30cmX40cm. They had one shrimp and some purple lil fish in it. Marine is quite a big challange, my uncle has a 6ft marine tank and its depth is 1m, starting it up is a mission but once its going u relax and enjoy. The nice thing with marine is that it all cleans itself, u mainly just clean the glass. Adding fish to the setup u wait for about 6 to 7 weeks so that all chemicals and bacteria can for in and the tank, then u able to add fish. I would love to have marine as the fish are much more colourfull and cuter. But its a pritty hard hobby starting it.... but we all differant. Maybe ill give it a try next year or so......

Do you think you'll ever 'go marine'?

Hmm :o) Tempting, when you walk through marine sections at stores. Wonder if marine fish are hard to breed. So expensive..
