Hi Derek,

I'm hoping you can help with this problem I am having.

After my WC, my water starts to turn green, and by about day 4, it is VERY green... to the point where I cannot see from the left side through to the right anymore.

On Friday I did a 80% waterchange, and introduced Purigen into the filters.

This has not helped at all (Altho it does help with the wood tannins.)

I was about to start a 3 day blackout today when I noticed my Angel's eggs have turned into wrigglers. (I don't hold up too much hope for them being in a community tank, but I'd like to give them a chance.)

My ammonia/Nitrites are both at 0ppm. Nitrates are at 5ppm. Tank is 285 litres, with 60w T8 lighting.

I believe this problem is an algae spore that is growing in the water.

What would you suggest I do to try clear up the water? Or should I look at doing a blackout soon? Can I do a blackout with the wrigglers in?

Seems strange that you are getting algae problems with nitrate levels that low.
See if someone you know has a nitrate test kit and see if the readings are the same.
Just remember that by doing a water change with algae problems, you are aggravating the situation by adding more nutrient to the water and helps with the algae bloom. Try adding some good activated carbon to your tank for a few days

Not aware of "purigen" product. What is it suppose to do?

Take out the ancistrus/pleco that you have in the tank to give the angel fry a chance of survival before switching off the lights
Also take out any other nocturnal fish that you have in the tank.

Hi Derek, I did a test on Nitrates with 2 test kits. One from API and another one from SERA I think. Both gave me very similar results. I've been advised that Daphnia might help the solution? But with the Angels in the tank, they would be eaten very quickly. (Would putting them into a breeding net help?) Purigen is a chemical filtration powder that removes a lot of tannins and polishes the water. It makes the tankes CRYSTAL clear without effecting the biological filtration adversly. See http://www.seachem.com/Products/product_pages/Purigen.html for more information

There was a daphnia filter used for koi ponds in the UK at one stage. It runs through a container with daphnia in it that feeds on the green water that passes through it. So yes, if you put the daphnia in a net and circulate the tank water through there it should work.

You might also want to try an algicide which should also clear up the problem.

Personally, as far as the Purigen goes, I would just use a good quality activated carbon.

I've got about 300grms of Seachem's activated carbon in. Put it in last week... made absolutely ZERO difference. I like the purigen in as it just cleans up the water nicely and makes it really look clear. Esp with the driftwood in, the tannins can sometimes get a bit much between Water changes. But the purigen and carbon is doing ZIP for the water. Stil going greener and greener. Retested the water this afternoon. pH 7.4 Ammonia and Nitrites 0. Nitrates still at 5ppm. From other research I've done, this is one of the most difficule and most stubborn algae to get rid of... so tonight at 19h00 marks the starts to 96 hours of 95% blackout!

My take on this. Check your gravel, have you marble chips? Any shells or other calcium rich things in your aquarium? Check your phosphate levels. And what lighting are you using? Rod

Gravel is fine silica sand capped with Midnight blue fine aqaurium gravel. No shells, except the shells of the snails. How do I test phosphate levels? Lighting is by 3 X 30w (10000k).

Stupid question! Do you switch off your lights at night!! What food you using? Some of the cheaper foods are over dyed. I use Tetra. Rod

Where do you live and what water are you using?

Bit of  a concern when you say that the carbon does not clear your water. Means that there is something wrong with the carbon and sounds like it is already fully utilised. Just remember there are different grades of carbon. Activated carbon will absorb impurities from the air also,. As Seachem is a good brand name, I doubt that it is a poor quality activated carbon, so I would think that it is already utilised and needs to be replaced.

There are test kits available for testing phosphate.

Hi FishFan and Rod Lights are on for 10 hours a day. Water is de-chlor'd water from tap. (Roodepoort area). Food has ALWAYS been Tetra, substituted 3 times a week with frozen bloodworm. When I can't get the Tetra, I will use Sera, but for the past 6 months I have used Tetra. The green haziness, which I now believe to have been a type of algae that grows in the water, (and not attached to anything) is coming under control. A 3 day blackout assisted with this enormously. The charcoal was not utilized, as it was a BRAND NEW packet I put into the filter, and not existing. I received some help from a fellow aquarist in PE who seems to be specialising in combatting algae, and is doing experiments based on different fertilization strategies, plant density, and light intensity. He encouraged me to do a 3 day black out, increase the input of CO2, which I unfortunately cannot do, and invest in a UV filter. Over the weekend I upgraded my internal filter to an external canister filter, and purchased an internal UV filter to be used for the next 2 weeks to completely destroy any algae in the tank. The algae started very soon after I killed a lot of the plants through a very strong medication for Anchor Worm, as well as the introduction of new plants I purchased around the same time.
